Companies Used To Have Their Own Website

I’m no fan of Facebook, Bebo, Faceparty and the other social networking websites. I appreciate the fact that millions of people love them and that I sound like some sort of old fart, but I just don’t get it.

If I want to “keep in touch” with “friends” I will email or phone them. (I put friends in inverted commas because people seem to collect them as some sort of competition. Is Chris really friends with 368 people? And no, I’m not just bitter because I’m a Billy No Mates).

However, a strange new thing has happened in the world of marketing. Companies used to have adverts with a phone number. Then the interweb came along and they put in a web link. But now, one company has gone for a social networking link.

Sure Girl - Lots of Friends but No PersonalitySure’s Ghost Train advert is aimed at the early teen girl market. Previously, advertisers found this group notoriously difficult to communicate with (mostly because their adverts were created by 40 year old blokes who knew as much about their daughters’ interests as they did about Upper Voltan mythology).

However, there is now a way in – through Bebo. Sure have set up their own skin (only recently allowed) and linked to their profile. Now teenage girls flock to become friends with Sure Girl® and chat about fashion, hobbies and generally “what makes them sweat.”

Sure Girl® now has 4,369 friends and counting – and she doesn’t even exist.

Now I do feel depressed about my lack of Facebook popularity…

Hope that's the other Chris you're using as an example!
