Let Me Be Your Aaaaggghhh!!!

Those good intentions – they never seem to last do they? When I first started on this blog a year ago, I had every intention of updating it each week. My main concern at the time was that I would run out of things to discuss (or more often moan about) in the world of marketing. No chance! There are still more than enough issues that need discussion – perhaps that is why the marketing trade press manage to get a full issue out each week…

This time round, I want to complain about novelty adverts on TV. In particular the ones that are supposed to be cute. First time round they are often pleasing to the eye and ear, but after 5,698 repetitions, the novelty is more grinding than appealing. Step forward Orange’s latest campaign.

Two, it appears to me, clockwork teeth are walking arm in arm along the pavement with a tune playing “Let me be your sweetheart.” The message? That they do broadband and mobile. The reason for the teeth? Unexplained. The effect after hearing the opening line every advert break for a fortnight? Infuriating.

The first time I saw the advert I did think, “Oh that’s quite fun.” However, the usual annoyance soon set in, especially as it seemed to be a regular during the first Ashes test, so I now associate it with failure and humiliation.

The key to using cute characters, if you really must, for adverts is to run a few variations on the ad, so that the viewer does not know immediately what’s coming. Otherwise, people will hate you – and that’s not a good plan for an advertising campaign…
